This book is the most appalling of true-life prison writing which chronicles the events of years spent in Spanish prisons. It highlights the fact that much international crime is planned in prison and how prison is the villain’s jobcentre.
This harrowing book is prison writing in the raw and is not for the squeamish or politically correct. The anti-Spanish and anti-French sentiment is solely the author’s undiluted emotions at the time of writing due to the treatment he received at the hands of his jailers.
Welcome to the brutal, ugly and dangerous corridors of Satan’s arena where Chance’s pen and fists worked doggedly whilst all around him was chaos.
Satan Arena eBook Christopher Chance Susan Chance
I have read Christopher Chance's previous books and was hoping to get my hands on a text copy of this book but I had to wait until I could get a friend to loan me a Kindle before I read Satan's Arena. Mr. Chance is a master of both martial arts as well as the pen. His prose is extremely well crafted yet totally inviting to read due to the gripping accounts of life in Spanish prisons that he vividly recreates. I read the entire book in a day even though it is by no means brief. Satan's Arena picks up about a decade after Mr. Chance's previous books which were focused upon his time in the infamous Carabanchel prison. By this time, the Carabanchel had been demolished to meet EU criteria for humane treatment of prisoners but anyone who reads this book will laugh at the utter lack of improvement in the filth and decrepitude of Spanish incarceration. That does not even begin to address the real problem that befell Mr. Chance which is the absolute lack of empathy, compassion, decency or morality of the other inmates - gypsies in particular. This book centers on the author's time in La Moraleja and Daroca prisons. While La Moraleja was a newer facility designed to house mostly foreign prisoners, it was not long before Christopher Chance was transferred to the Daroca prison. Daroca was another decrepit filth ridden hellhole which inspired the title of the book. Mr. Chance's books are not for the faint of heart, nor would I recommend Spanish or French nationals as a target audience. Mr. Chance is unapologetic over his loathing of the corrupt Spanish judicial system, massively abusive and sexually perverted prison staff as well as the habit of 'snitching' which he sees as a trait that virtually all Spaniards possess. In a review of one of the author's previous books, I mentioned that one of his strengths is to be able to evoke feelings of horror and revulsion followed by laughter all in one page of reading because Mr. Chance manages to describe graphic violence only to follow it with humourous metaphors that weave popular culture and sarcasm into what would otherwise be an account befitting of a gladiator. Now, here is the important part: This is NOT a book that glorifies violence or prison life. Despite the absolute authenticity of this work, Mr. Chance is speaks very openly about the depth of his emotional despair while incarcerated so this is in no way a 'gangster fairy tale'. The love of his wife kept him going under such conditions as well as how he used his mental discipline from martial arts to keep the profound sadness and hopelessness he felt under control. This is not an overstatement as the book mentions that one of the purposes of the morning prisoner count was to see who committed suicide or who was murdered in the night. If you happen to find yourself on the Costa Del Sol and think you can make a few extra quid, read this book as you will change your mind in a hurry.Recommended:
1. The Lone Brit on 13 - Mr. Chance's first book
2. Carabanchel - More from Spain's most infamous jail house
3. Satan's Arena - A definite read but best when preceded by his previous works so the reader has context.
Addition:

In the UK, the series is 'Banged Up Abroad' and in the USA the series is 'Locked Up Abroad'
