This book, first published in 1945, is a fascinating personal account of the late U.S. Ambassador to Spain Carlton J. H. Hayes’ diplomatic mission in Spain during World War II, from May 1942 to January 1945. Whilst briefly touching on Spain’s internal affairs, the principal focus is firmly on American policy toward Spain during those three wartime years, and Spain’s response thereto. Hayes provides the reader with a candid and factual record of this period, gleaned from firsthand eyewitness accounts and sensitive information he was privy to during his tenure. He draws in detail on excerpts from his personal diary kept for those three years, as well as various conversations, documents and correspondence from and with President Roosevelt and others. A fantastic historical record.

Wartime Mission in Spain 19421945 eBook Carlton J H Hayes

Absolutely fantastic as a record of history. I really enjoyed this book's contents as a kind of back-story or record of non-typical information about WWII. This fellow was brilliantly chosen as U.S. ambassador, as a college professor, which set just the right tone in the relationship. What I gleaned most, as a research historian with focus on WWII and military history, are the mistakes made by the other side, beginning with their appointees, which projected an entirely opposite and, in the end, wrong message. A very basic PR lesson!

The ambassador's description of critical war materials mining elements (and how he thwarted them) are expertly done, on a level of mastery seldom seen, since, perhaps, General Sherman's very detailed logistics numbers in his own memoirs.

Highly recommended.

Wartime Mission in Spain 19421945 eBook Carlton J H Hayes Reviews

This is a description of the arrival and role of the second US ambassador to Spain during World War II. Unlike the Weddells, who died in a train wreck in 1949 and left no account, this is useful description of the activities of the US ambassador. It can be supplemented by further details in the records deposited in the Columbia University archives. With regard to the rescue of the Jews unfortunately it says nothing about the emigration to the United States in 1940-1941. Not surprising since Hays arrived in June 1942. This is unfortunate because most of the Jews who left through Spain had gone by the end of 1941. Very few remained to be rescued by the time of Ambassador Hays because those who had not fled west, the vast majority, were sent east to the extermination camps of Poland.
Great buying experience
FABULOUS READ!!! Even if you don't read history much..this is a beautifully written account of an ambassadors role to keep Spain neutral during WW11..what a challenge!!!
Enjoyed The second world war reminisces
