Elise's book is one of those really great ones that at the same time are hard to classify. She has an incredible voice, and you feel as if you were standing right next to her throughout this fascinating memoir. The book follows Elise's life through childhood and on to the present day. She did not have a lot of luck through most of it. The running themes here are going to be horses, music, travel, relationships, magick, dysfunctional family dynamics and how a young child is broken, mended and comes out as a whole if not unscathed adult in the end.Elise's travels through Europe are engaging, although some of her problems along the way will simply make you cringe. The fact that you feel a bystander throughout most of it can be exhausting, since you'll tend to want to reach out, pick her up, hold her and make things right, if only for a page or two, and your body will react accordingly, leaving you tired from the stress of wanting to reach out and being unable to. As an EMT, I also quite easily diagnosed the effects of a physical trauma she suffered, and wanted to scream that she was not properly tended to medically for the longest, longest time.
There is a lot of beauty and bravery here, even during the darker portions of the memoir. I feel honored to have been allowed a glimpse into her life, and would be even more honored to call her "friend" in real life if I actually knew her. So do yourself a favor, and pick up a copy. It's the most engaging memoir I have read in quite a long time.
