I have several comments numbered below:1. When I bought this book I didn't realize it covered black bear attacks that hadn't been written about previously (for the most part). As an avid animal attack reader I was delighted to find I'd never heard of most of the attacks.
2. I don't necessarily appreciate the sensitive care he's taken in avoiding the gory details. I want the gory details, but I do understand his reasoning and would probably do the same should I ever write a book on the subject.
3. Bear in mind the short length of this book. I finished it very quickly. I hope the author's new book is out soon.
4. And finally, wild predators are rarely dangerous to mankind but when they are, they're very, very dangerous.

Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read regarding Black bears. Insight is to be gained reading this book especially now as more & more people are encroaching upon the wildlife habitats of these animals. I live in Orlando Florida with its northern boarders pushing into the forest land of the Ocala Nat'l forest.& unfortunately increasing incidents with the Black bears have become a major problem , sometimes tragic, for some of these residents This is a must read!!
Not so great a book but author is probably correct in his assessment of increased black bear attacks as animal's
fear of humans decreases.
I didn't buy Carl Semencic's Encounter for myself. I got it for a cousin I'm fond enough of to try to get over his need to hunt. I'm one of the animal rights activists Semencic thinks are wrongheaded. While I don't agree with him, after reading his book, I can appreciate his perspective. And that's the real victory for Encounter it's good, it's well-written, it puts you in the midst of bear hunts and shows them to you in various locations with their differences in bears, conditions and interactions with the animals. Where are most of us going to get the opportunity to experience that? More than that, though, he investigates those relationships that ended in tragedy for humans and the bears.
I thought I would only leaf through this book before sending it on as a gift. But I was drawn in. Straightforward writing, intelligence and a respect for the bear--and all animals--make this book a surprise and definitely worth the read no matter what your orientation toward hunting. While I'm still not a believer and wish no one would kill anything, this gave me a broader view. It's an honest and tough look at hunting and man-bear relationships by a sportsman who uses a muzzleloader rifle! When you make your own shot and have to take more than a minute to re-load in the wild, that takes a certain kind of courage.
I still don't agree with the idea of hunting, but Encounter made me think. And I think what's worse than being to the right or left of any attitudinal spectrum is dogma judging any idea or action without even trying to understand.
This is a good book and well done despite the topic I never thought I could find interesting. Semencic succeeds in doing it. This book is an intelligent look at man-environment interactions, especially in those cases when they go wrong and end in unnecessary deaths of people and bears. This is the point Semencic makes in the midst of the straightforward and meticulous details of hunting. I still don't agree with the act, but I appreciate the knowledge and that Encounter let me experience what I will never do myself...and isn't that the point of a good read?
